Fiji Suspended From Commonwealth

Fiji has become only the second country ever to be removed from the Commonwealth( Nigeria was removed for a period in 1995) after failing to meet the conditions set by the Commonwealth Action Group one month ago (see here)

Foreign Minister Mr Mc Cully  who was a part of the action group has said that Fiji has been given enough warnings and that there now needs to be “a period of patience” while we wait for Fiji to return to democracy.

“New Zealand can do nothing to force Fiji to restore democracy so there must now be a “period of patience” Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Murray McCully says.

Fiji was suspended from the Commonwealth overnight after failing to meet conditions including resuming a dialogue with opposition groups and holding early elections by Tuesday midnight (local time).”
